Ozarks Regional YMCA Hosts Kids For “Snow Days At The Y”

News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Even though it was a snow day Thursday for schools in Springfield and many other area communities, the world does not come to a stop.

Many parents have to find out what they are going to do with their kids as they prepare to go to work or tackle other responsibilities.

Any time the Springfield district cancels school, the staff at both of the YMCA’s in town gear up to host “Snow Days at the Y.”

The alarm clock went off Thursday morning and Lindsey Riley quickly learned her twin daughters would not be filing into their second grade classrooms.

“The first thing is — what am I going to do with my kids, because I still have to go to work and that’s probably the first thing I worry about is what to do with them,” Riley said.

On every snow day since her daughters started going to school, Riley has known she can count on the Y.

“It’s really nice because they have drop-in care, they plan for it, it’s not something that you have to schedule beforehand you can come and fill out paperwork in the morning,” Riley said.

“The parents don’t have to wonder — as long as the school gives us enough time to get staff here we can get things going,” said the Y’s Jeremy Hiatt.

When kids get there in the morning, they are separated by grade. Throughout the day, they take part in everything from swimming to games to arts and crafts.

The Y does not provide lunch, but provides two snacks.

“I know that they’re getting good quality care, they have fun all day and they’re worn out by the time I pick them up,” Riley said. “But at least I know they’re safe and they’re close by — that way I know if roads get bad, I can come by and pick them up.”

The YMCA opens from 7:30 a.m. – 5.30 p.m. any time there is a snow day in Springfield.

The fee is $18 for non-members of the Y, $13 for members.

Fees vary at other Ozarks Regional YMCA locations.
