Ozarks Food Harvest Needs Food for Summer Months

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.–The weather is certainly no indication of it, but we’re about six weeks away from students starting summer vacation.

The break from the books for some students will also mean a lack of food they won’t be getting at school.

That’s why KOLR10 is partnering with Arvest Bank to raise money and food donations for Ozarks Food Harvest.

It’s all part of the “One Million Meals” campaign that is running now through June 2nd.

It’s a mission designed to fight hunger especially during the spring and summer months when there’s a food pantry shortage.

“We think about donations we’ll have Thanksgiving, we’ll have Christmas and everyone’s in that very giving mindset, but we tend to forget that hunger is a year round issue that we need to be focused on all the time,” says Jordan Browning, Community Partnerships and Advocacy Coordinator for Ozarks Food Harvest.

Browning says the summer months are when kids are most likely to miss meals and also when donations are the lowest at the pantry.

“A lot of those children that are within our area are getting free and reduced lunch from the National School Lunch Program so when the summer months come and they are no longer in school, they need another access source to food,” says Browning.

To help make sure the summer food stock is in full supply, here’s how you can get involved in the “One Million Meals” campaign.

“People can make a monetary donation, a non-perishable food donation or they can also purchase a paper fork for a dollar and all of that funding will go back to Ozarks Food Harvest,” says Browning.

For every dollar that’s donated, Ozarks Food Harvest can transfer that into five meals.

Here’s a list of food partners where you can donate.
