Nexstar Employees Giving Back To The Community

News
SPRINGFIELD, Mo–KOLR10 employees are being encouraged by our bosses to leave work this week.

Our corporate owner, Nexstar broadcasting began 20 years ago.
To celebrate our milestone, employees across 115 stations are spending part of their work days on the job for local charities.

It’s Nexstar’s 20th year so the company wants to donate 20,000 hours back to the community.  KOLR10 and KOZL employees are working for Habitat for Humanity and the Humane Society.

Donna Casamento, Humane Society Executive Director tells KOLR10,  “we do everything we  can to help as many animals that are in need in the community.”

The Humane Society is a non-profit volunteer organization that is dedicated to helping save  animals lives.

“As we’ve entered into our no kill mission one of the things that has become so important to us is to have volunteers help us solve our problems.”

Volunteers at KOLR10 will be turning in their broadcasting skills and walking dogs, cleaning cages and playing with the kittens.

“We do still have a need for people coming out everyday.”

Casamento said  they have 350 volunteers throughout the year.

“With the more animals we’re carrying for everyday more work is involved in that so we need more help from people in the community.”

Employees from KOLR10  are also grabbing knee pads and paintbrushes to  volunteer at a  Habitat for Humanity home.

Aaron Norrick, Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Coordinator said, “they’re really getting to tangibly see what their hard work is doing  as well as the good side of things it’s just great to give back. “

Norrick said their vision is for everyone to have a decent  place to live and to bring people  together to build homes, community, and hope.

“Really getting to impact the community that they live in.”

Habitat for Humanity tells KOLR10 volunteers are the backbone of its mission.  If Habitat had to pay for the labor donated by these people it would cost $900,000 for this year alone.

Both charities say their volunteer base is like family and they need more people willing to step in to help. Most often, it’s just a few hours a week but the impact is huge for the agencies.
