LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) – A Missouri man has been convicted of stabbing his estranged wife to death.

Seventy-year-old Larry Ratliff, of Grain Valley, was convicted Wednesday in the death of 65-year-old Carolyn Ratliff.

The Clay County jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without parole for murder and 40 years in prison for armed criminal action.

Police found Carolyn Ratliff dead in January 2016 at a relative’s home in Warrensburg. Officers found Ratliff crying in the driveway.

He reportedly told officers he had stabbed his wife four times. Investigators say he also called the couple’s daughters to tell them he had killed their mother.

Fox4KC reports Ratliff testified that he inadvertently grabbed a hunting knife while trying to get his cell phone and then snapped and began stabbing the victim.
