Monday, December 4 Morning Forecast

News

Cold front comes through today, temperatures tumble tonight.

Temperatures are very warm this morning, and they’ll stay very warm today on a gusty south wind ahead of a cold front. Southerly gusts to 35 mph will push highs into record territory — High 70 degrees, record 72 (2001).

We’ll stay dry early this afternoon, the cold front arrives after 3 PM with a line of storms moving through Joplin ~4-5PM, through Springfield ~6-7PM. The cold front will have enough instability and wind shear (change in wind speed/ direction with height) to fuel a strong to severe storm. We have a Marginal Risk for severe weather meaning one or two storms could be strong to severe. Our main threat will be for 60 mph damaging wind gusts, small dime size hail is also possible. The tornado threat, while not zero, is very low.

Storms charge eastward this evening, exiting the Ozarks by midnight. Behind the front we’ll find clearing, and a temperature tumble. Arctic air sits behind this front, and we’ll find lows making it to freezing tonight (remember after a near-record warm day in the 70’s)!

Tomorrow, clouds will decrease and temperatures will stay cold and steady. We’ll only warm to 45 degrees under partly cloudy skies. Lows get into the 20’s tomorrow night.

Wednesday will be another chilly one in the 40’s, but another front with a reinforcing shot of cool air comes through… bringing us down to the 30’s on Thursday.

An upper-level disturbance swings through Friday bringing the chance for a few light flurries. For now, snow impact and accumulation looks to be very low.

Temperatures stay in the 30’s Friday and Saturday before the Arctic air mass finally moves east Sunday, helping temperatures rebound into the 50’s under mostly sunny skies.
