MO Dept. of Corrections needs Prison Guards

MISSOURI — The Missouri Department of Corrections is lacking prison guards… at least 800 of them.

Missourinet says Corrections Director Anne Precythe confirms that number has doubled during the past year.

Precythe says one reason could be low wages for both new and senior employees.

For instance, someone who has worked at the department for 15 years will make the same amount as someone who just started.

Missouri ranks 49th in corrections officer wages in the United States.

The Show-Me-State is home to 21 prisons, which house at least 31,000 prisoners.
