OSCEOLA, Mo.– A Missouri state Representative has come under fire for reacting to the news of vandalism of a monument at the National Cemetery in Springfield.

In a Facebook post, Representative Warren Love(R-District 125) reacted to the story saying “This is totally against the law. I hope they are found and hung from a tall tree with a long rope.”

Fellow Republican representative Shamed Dogan(R-District 98) tweeted a screenshot of the post with the caption” Vandalizing property is wrong, but hoping for people to be hung/lynched over it?? Way over the line!! What is wrong with us #moleg?”

The Missouri Democratic party released a statement Wednesday evening saying:

“This is a call for lynching by a sitting State Representative. Calls for political violence are unacceptable. He needs to resign.”

The Associated Press reports that, “he didn’t really mean that and says he thinks it’s terrible when someone vandalizes an object of remembrance. Love apologized in a later post he provided to AP.”

Love’s original post is no longer up.
