Marines Critically Injured in Amphibious Vehicle Fire

SAN DIEGO — 15 Camp Pendleton-based Marines were injured during a training exercise Wednesday, when the vehicle they were in caught fire.

Five Marines are in critical condition, and five other Marines are listed in serious condition.

The troops were participating in a pre-deployment land-based training operation about 9:33 a.m. when the accident occurred.

According to the Marine Corps, the amphibious vehicle involved in the accident has been used to transport Marines from sea to land since the 1970s.

The accident is under investigation.
