AURORA, Mo.– After days of bleak weather, Thomas Carney went looking for a silver lining.
“I figured since it rained the day before,” he says. “It’d be a good time to go find some mushrooms.”
He walked back into the woods behind his house, where he says morels have been found from time to time.
Without a single mushroom, he hiked back toward his house.
“I got about a hundred yards, over there, and there was a dump site where people had been dumping,” he says
“Laying right there in the open, there was a skull.”
It wasn’t just a skull.
In trying to determine how real what he’d found was, he took the skull, what he thought was a tailbone, and what might have been a hipbone back to his house.
He showed it to Mike Ormsby, his girlfriend’s dad.

“I brought it back. We looked at it. The back tooth had a cavity in it so I knew it was real,” Carney says.
Carney and Ormsby called the police.
Aurora police investigated the dump site until around 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
Now, they confirm what Carney found is, in fact, human remains.
While Ozarks First is still waiting to find out the gender or age to the person the remains belong to, Carney has his suspicions.
“I know it had 16 teeth on the top part of the jaw, so I know it had to be an adult,” he says.
Missouri State Highway Patrol has taken over this investigation.
