A division of the American Library Association votes to remove the name of Laura Ingalls Wilder from a major book award. The board says it’s concerned about Wilder’s portrayal of African Americans and Native Americans in her Little House books.
According to the website, The Guardian, the Association for Library Service to Children made the decision on Saturday. It says Wilder includes “expressions of stereotypical attitudes inconsistent with its core values.”
The name of the prize was changed from Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal to simply “Children’s Literature Legacy Award.”
