JOPLIN, MO (KODE) — Multiple families are without a home in Joplin as their house was ravaged by a fire this afternoon.

The Joplin Fire Department was called right before 3 this afternoon to a home near C Street and Wall Avenue. A three family, multi-story apartment home was engulfed in flames.

Smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters worked from the outside of the home to contain the flames.

Multiple residents were home at the time the flames began – narrowly escaping.

A resident we spoke with says eight people lived in the home, he wasn’t sure how many were home when the fire started.

“We smelled smoke, I was upstairs and I come downstairs and go to my living room I can’t see and as soon as I open the door it went like that and then I had to tell her to get out of the house and then we lost our two cats,” said Gregory Ellis, a resident.

The Fire Marshal is on the scene and investigating the cause of the flames.
