MANCATO, Kan — A man from Kansas man walks into a sheriff’s office and shoots two deputies. That man then led troopers on a chase which ended with him killing himself.
“Tragedy struck my office today,” said Jewell County Sheriff Don Jacobs.
Tragedy, one that Jacobs says nobody could predict.
“You always hear this won’t happen in a place like this. But it did.”
Now, the community is asking, how? “Nobody saw this coming so we’ll be asking how could we have stopped this or prevented it or seen it,” said Thadd Hinkle, a neighbor of the susupect.
Hinkle lived next door to Jason Whitson, Whitson’s ex wife and five kids. He says despite Whitson’s ex-wife’s alcohol issues, he always enjoyed his neighbors.
“I enjoyed having the kids live next door. They played in my yard and Jason would play with them,” Hinkle says.
But the KBI says it was Jason Whitson who walked into the Jewell County sheriff’s office Tuesday morning, asked for a deputy, and when one approached him, shot through a door into the dispatch center.
His bullets hit two deputies. One, was airlifted to the hospital, has had surgery, and is now recovering. The other has since been released from the hospital.
