Galena Elementary Sees Healthier Students Due to Water Filling Stations

News

GALENA, Mo — You may start to see a fair share of blue water bottles making their way around town. The Skaggs Foundation recently gifted the bottles to all students at Galena Elementray, however it’s proving more impactful than just hydration.

D.A.R.E. GRADUATION

Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader didn’t shy away from addressing the opioid epidemic to a group of elementary school DARE graduates. The challenge they’ll face as adults is unlike any other – and truthfully, is just the tip of the iceberg for a proper education in Galena.

Staci Baker is the Principal at Galena Elementary. “What we always say is that we want lifelong learners, and that we want to teach our kids to be lifelong citizens in whatever they choose to do in life.”

And for that, you’ll need fuel: High quality H2O.

Daniel, Josie, and Ava are 4th graders at Galena Elementary; Recipients of a $2,000 grant from the Skaggs Foundation.

Those new water bottles and 2 fancy fountains were gifted to the school just after the Christmas break.

It may seem like a small gesture to handout to all the students, but the benefits have already flooded in.

School nurse Julia Hagler says their flu count is down, and their kids are in class.

“It’s literally the first thing I tell kids when they come in here,” said Julia Hagler, Galena Elementary School Nurse. “I ask them if you’ve been drinking water? That’s the first thing I say when they come in with a bloody nose or an upset stomach. I ask them, are you drinking water? Because that’s the biggest key.”

The Skaggs Foundation was created in 2013, and has given more than $3.5 million in grants to organizations located in Stone and Taney County.
