Freezing Temps Impact Mississippi River

ST. LOUIS – Freezing temperatures sweeping across the Midwest are also affecting the waterways around the region.

Ice is forming along the Mississippi River in St. Louis.

The U.S. Coast Guard says this can cause problems for boats trying to get across.

“It’s kind of impacting the water levels and the water flow so that’s not helping our low water situation,” Lt. Commander Kristine Neeley with the U.S. Coast Guard said.

If water levels get too low, transporting goods like salt and grain fuel becomes much harder and even dangerous.

If necessary, the coast guard will have to shut down the St. Louis port.

It’s monitoring conditions just in case.
