SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – CoxHealth offers free 3D mammograms for uninsured and under-insured women on the third Wednesday of every month.
The best way to treat cancer is to catch it early, and between advancements in medical technology and yearly mammograms– women stand a better chance of survival now than ever before.
“When I began doing mammography, [breast cancer] was a death sentence,” said manager of the Breast Care Clinic Susan Smith. “Now, if you can detect the cancer under two centimeters, you’ve got a 95% cure rate.”
Monthly screenings will take place on the third Wednesday of each month from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Hulston Cancer Clinic in Springfield.
Nationally, one in eight women will battle breast cancer, so CoxHealth partnered with the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks in hopes to decrease that number. All insurance plans must cover traditional mammograms, however the most precise mode of detection comes in 3D, and is not fully covered by all programs.
“I describe a normal mammogram is like taking an image of a book– you get to see the front and the back. The 3D allows us to see the pages of the book, so we can see any legions, especially in dense breast tissue– which 50-60% of women have,” said Smith.
The CoxHealth Outpatient Center in Branson hosts quarterly free mammogram screenings, the closest one will happen on March 21 from 3-5 p.m. The location in Monett will also host a free screening on March 19. For more information on monthly free, 3D mammograms call 417-269-LADY.
