FORT LEAVENWORTH, Ks — Chelsea Manning will walk out of military prison today – 28 years early.

The former army intelligence analyst, who is a transgender woman, was previously sentenced to 35 years in prison. She was convicted for stealing nearly a million pages of documents and videos that were handed over to Wikileaks.

Manning’s sentence was commuted in January by then-President Obama. According to a White House statement, Manning’s release date is today – May 17th.

Some republicans blasted the decision to shorten Manning’s sentence.
