BEAVER COUNTY, Penn. – Just before 2 a.m., along the banks of the Youghiogheny River in Dawson, Fayette County, flames raced through Chubboys Tavern.
Firefighters say it was a tough one to handle – they couldn’t get to the roof and flames were between the walls.
“It was a full engulfed commercial structure fire. It was through the roof, from the get-go it was pretty much a surround and drown … couldn’t make any entry into it.”
But fire companies from Fayette and Westmoreland counties fought the good fight as intense flames and thick smoke-kissed the early morning sky.
Chubboys is now a burned out shell of a building – it could not be saved. But out of the ashes, this appeared unscathed.
“The only thing we (have) seen that we could salvage was an American flag that was at the entrance of the building.”
Chubboys was once a nightclub, but was recently purchased by another owner and remodeled; it was becoming a popular spot for drinks and food.
“It’s an old building to us, but it’s a new business to everybody.”
Chubboys was closed at the time of the fire. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
