FT. LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — A busy day at Ft. Leonard Wood as four special visitors made their way to the base.
First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, Reading Rainbow’s Levar Burton and Astronaut Mark Kelly read to Elementary School kids, then toured areas of the post.
Cheers and applause rang out from children as the First Lady, alongside Reading Rainbow’s Levar Burton, visited Thayer Elementary School at Ft. Leonard Wood Tuesday. The two shared a story of courage and bravery with a gym full of kids.
“I thought it was really exciting,” said Thayer Second Grader Makenna Faubion.
The two read Burton’s book called “The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm.” Dr. Jill Biden was accompanied by Astronaut Mark Kelly to read “Mousetronaut.”
“They both taught us a lesson,” said Faubion. “You can do big things even if you’re small, and the second book taught us about courage.”
“We’re so fortunate to have the military presence here,” said Superintendent Dr. Brian Henry. “And kids understand the significance of this. They were very excited and, of course, you heard them screaming “Michelle Obama,” so they understand this and I know they’ll remember this the rest of their lives.”
Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden also made their way to the Warrior Tower at Ft. Leonard Wood, where they saw soldiers in training building confidence through drills.
“I’m speechless for them to be here,” said Private First Class Eric Rodriguez. “It’s great. She came up and said thanks and thanked us for serving our country and it was a great feeling for me. There are no words to explain her visit here.”
