SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — At Evangel University this afternoon family and friends had a special ceremony for some national guard soldiers.
It was the deployment ceremony for the Missouri National Guard’s 935th Aviation Support Battalion.
The 935th is going to Fort Hood, Texas for mobilization training, where they will meet soldiers from Illinois, Georgia and South Dakota.
The battalion will assume command and control of units from throughout the nation and will be responsible for nearly 500 soldiers, about 300 vehicles, and supporting field-level maintenance of more than 100 aerial systems.
They say they will miss family back here in the Ozarks but nowadays, it’s easier to stay in touch.
“The letters being able to Facetime now, luckily you’ve got that connection now through social media to where we can keep up with what’s going on and we are not missing out so much,” Sgt. Brian Newton said.
“This is my third time going overseas, but just as Sgt Newton mentioned, we will have plenty of opportunities to communicate with the family so I am looking forward to going and looking forward to hurrying up and coming back home,” Corporal Markitta Carter said.
The unit is expected to come back home in the summer of next year.
