SPRINGFIELD, Mo– Contrary to his resignation letter, Councilman Justin Burnett says that his reasons for leaving weren’t just for his health.
Burnett also said the scrutiny he was receiving on social media led him to believe resigning was the best option for the community. However, he decided that would be taking the easy way out.
“The decision to rescind my resignation was one that came after deciding that that may be the easy way to avoid some of this criticism that you see on social media, just to get out of the public eye. But, it’s not the best way,” said Burnett.
A lot of the pressure on Councilman Burnett comes from “Recall Justin Burnett”, a group of citizens that want to recall his position.
The leader of the “Recall Justin Burnett” campaign, Katie Webb, says this kind of indecisive behavior is unacceptable.
“Now I’m really upset. That’s a big indicator of how he manages himself professionally as well. The same way he manages himself in his personal life. And we can’t have somebody on council that’s going to make statements publicly and then go back and change his mind in 24 hours,” says Webb.
City Attorney Dan Wichmer says although Burnett’s resignation was effective today, he had until 11:59 Friday night to rescind.
