BERRYVILLE, Ark. – A man from Carroll County accused of killing his autistic brother is ordered to undergo a mental evaluation this week.
Online Court records show the public defender for a now 18-year-old Joseph Santiago asked the court to dismiss his prior request for a mental evaluation a day before he was set to be tested.
Circuit Judge Charles Jackson denied this last-minute request.
Santiago is accused of fatally stabbing his brother 21-year-old Alex Santiago on January 17th 2017.
Carroll County authorities say following Santiago’s arrest, he also admitted to an incident in 2016 at the Osage Trailer Park. Authorities say he allegedly locked his brother in a bathroom and then set the family’s trailer on fire.
However, he pleaded not guilty to arson, attempted murder, and capital murder in February 2017.
