SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Hello movie maniacs. New at the box from the world of J.K. Rowling is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Warner Bros.). This is the second installment of the “Fantastic Beasts” series set in the wizarding world. Fans, listen up, the character of Newt carries a wand, practices magic, and works for the ministry of magic even though he was expelled from Hogwarts. This puzzled several fans online especially since Hagrid wasn’t afforded those liberties. J.K. Rowling has explained that the reason for this will be revealed throughout the series. I’m just average on these movies, so, I was not up in arms about this.
Also on screens is Instant Family (paramount Pictures). A couple find themselves in over their heads when they adopt three children. Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne star in the movie. Byrne is really funny, like understatedly funny, if you ask me. This movie is inspired by the real events from the life of writer/director Sean Anders.
And, the thriller, Widows (20th Century Fox) is set in contemporary Chicago, a midst a time of turmoil, when four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities, take fate into their own hands, and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriguez lead the cast. The film is based on the 1985 British series and directed by Steve Mcqueen.
New on blu-ray this week is Mile 22 (STX Entertainment). An elite American intelligence officer, aided by a top-secret tactical command unit, tries to smuggle a mysterious police officer with sensitive information out of the country. Mark Wahlberg stars in this Peter Berg film. I love Berg films, I mean love Berg films, and this was super underrated in its theatrical release. I loved it so very much, very fast and very, very underrated. I will note for family viewing, it’s rather violent.
