SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Hello Movie Maniacs!  New at the box this weekend is “MIB International” (Columbia Pictures) – The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest threat to date: a mole in the MIB organization.  Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson star.  This film takes place 7 years after MIB 3.  Hemsworth and Thompson previously teamed up as Thor and Valkyrie in “Thor: Ragnorok” and “Avengers: Endgame”.

Also hitting screens is “Dead Don’t Die” (Focus Features) – The peaceful town of Centerville finds itself battling a zombie horde as the dead start rising from their graves.  Bill Murray and Adam Driver take the leads here.  Just a little prop tidbit from the production, the vintage Pontiac Tempest is a reference to the car driven to the cemetery at the beginning of George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” from 1968 – hey, that was even before i was born!

And, “Late Night” is on screens for you now! (Amazon Studios) – Mindy Kaling wrote and stars in this film about a late-night talk-show host who suspects that she may lose her long-running show.  This stars Emma Thompson.  Kaling wrote this screenplay specifically with Thompson in mind!

“The Secret Life of Pets 2” beat out X-Men’s “Dark Phoenix” for the top spot at the box!  Now, I have to say, “Dark Phoenix” was a little too special effect-y and CGI for my personal taste, therefore a smidge boring.  I did however, love every scene with Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, well, except for one paticular scene!

Brand new on Blu-Ray this week is “Five Feet Apart” (Lionsgate) – A pair of teenagers with cystic fibrosis meet in a hospital and fall in love, though their disease means they must avoid close physical contact.  Pretty good flick, not life changing or anything.

And, also on Blu-Ray is “Captive State” (Focus Features) – Set in a Chicago neighborhood nearly a decade after an occupation by an extra-terrestrial force, “Captive State” explores the lives on both sides of the conflict. John Goodman and Vera Farmiga lead the cast. I cannot say enough great things about the talent of Mr. John Goodman.  Fun fact for you about him, many know, he went to college here in Springfield at what was then SMSU, currently MSU, and is still very supportive of our area.  He came to do a telethon where I was interning and I ran the teleprompter for him.  He was very nice and rather shy.

One of my favorite traditions is the outdoor movies at Founders Park. This Friday see the Oscar nominated “Spiderman:  Into the Spider-Verse” and Saturday is the most recent best picture oscar winner, “Green Book”!  Admission is always free! Visit parkboard.org for more info and the schedule!

Let’s interact on social media! That’s always a good time!
