Box Office Buzz – April 4, 2019

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Hello Movie Maniacs!  We are inching closer and closer to summer blockbuster season!  New at the box is “Shazam!” (Warner Bros.) We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out.  In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word, Shazam! This streetwise fourteen-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero. Shazam is an acronym using the names of the gods that give him his powers. Solomon gave wisdom, Hercules gave strength, Atlas gave stamina. Zeus gave power, Achilles gave courage, and Mercury gave speed!

I know many excited about the update to the creeper “Pet Sematary” (Paramount Pictures). A family moves to a rural home where they are welcomed and enlightened about the eerie ‘Pet Sematary’ located nearby. After the tragedy of their cat being killed by a truck, they resort to burying it in the mysterious pet cemetery, which is definitely not as it seems.  Writer Stephen King says that out of all of his novels, the 1989 original Pet Sematary, genuinely scared him!

And, finally, director Harmony Korine takes us on a trip in “Beach Bum” (Neon) – Matthew McConaughey stars as a rebellious stoner named moondog who lives life by his own rules.  Isla Fisher and Snoop Dogg co-star.  I mean, this movie is quite a ride and I cannot even imagine anyone other than McConaughey in the lead role.  Gary Oldman was offered the role first (that’s just crazy to think about!) Good thing he turned it down! Not a movie for everyone and not for the kiddos for sure!

New on blu-ray this week is one of the best from the most recent awards season!  Vice (Annapurna Distribution). The story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe. Christian Bale is wildly unrecognizable, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney is always super solid and Sam Rockwell is excellent as George W. I also love the success of Springfield’s own, Brad Pitt’s production company, “Plan B,” who produced this flick!

This weekend is the Branson International Film Festival April!  All the details and schedule are at see musical guest Keith Harkin. If we want cool events in our area, it’s cool to support them!

We are just a couple weeks away from the kick off and filming weekend! SATO 48, the most amazing 48-hour film challenge!  I cannot say it enough, it’s a must!  Everything you need to know is at:
