SPRINGFIELD, Mo.–Bass Pro Shops kicked off its “Gone Fishing” event with a big donation to local nonprofit groups.

The outdoor gear and apparel store donated 32,000 fishing rods and reels nationwide to groups that encourage kids to get active and get outside.

Locally — Bass Pro gave hundreds of rods and wheels to the Ozark Trails Council Boy Scout Association

The gently used rods and reels were collected earlier this year when customers could trade them in for a discount on new gear.

“Michael Widman, with the Boy Scouts, said, “we’ve got new fishing boats out there, new pontoon boats with fish finders, and this is a great way to supplement our fishing program this summer so great timing.”

The gone fishing event also features free activities at bass pro shops nationwide this weekend and next weekend.
Among other things — families are invited to try their hand at fishing with free catch and release ponds.
