Austin Petersen: “I’m Better Than Josh”

News

BRIAN

Good evening. Welcome to Ozarks Tonight. I’m Brian Calfano, and joined this evening by a Republican candidate for the nomination to go against Claire McCaskill in the November election. Of course, I’m talking about Austin Peterson. Very pleased to have him here with us tonight.

PETERSEN

Thanks for having me, Brian.

BRIAN

Now one of the reasons I think a lot of folks are wondering about you coming on and talking to us is simply because there is a lot of attention going to someone considered the front runner on your side of the ballot for the August seventh primary. Tell everybody why you think you’re a strong contrast with Attorney General Hawley and why you’re a better candidate.

PETERSEN

Well, there’s policy differences, of course, and then there’s tactical differences. I’ve been all over the state the last year campaigning for this office most of the people that I meet on the campaign trail are A.B.C. voters.

So, if you’re an A.B.C. voter, I’m the only Republican senate candidate who has beaten Claire McCaskill in a head to head poll by double digits. This is a state that Trump won by nineteen points, and, in a scientific nonpartisan poll,

I beat McCaskill by sixteen points. Trump won by nineteen. That’s how you should be doing. Right now, Josh Hawley is either within the margin of error in polls, or he’s losing to her in polls.

Sometimes I wonder if the Republican establishment would rather just lose with someone they can control than win with someone that they can’t control like myself.

BRIAN

Now what do you mean by A.B.C. candidate?

PETERSEN

Anybody but Claire. They just want the strongest Republican Senate candidate to beat Claire McCaskill. And, of course, Josh Hawley and I do have policy differences. The day that we were both filing for office, for example, I was in front of our state legislature saying that we need to get rid of gun free zones in the state of Missouri, and the Attorney General, conversely, was saying that we need to move swiftly to ban firearms accessories with executive orders, and he said he was open to other gun control measures as well.

Even Democrats in Missouri support the Second Amendment, so not only my better than Josh on beating clear but I’m better than Josh on the issues that Republicans and conservatives care about.

BRIAN

Alright, so what else?

PETERSEN

Well, sure. So a lot of people here in Missouri are being harmed by the import taxes that are being raised. Missouri farmers are hurting. The mid-America nail companies are suffering from the increase in prices on goods and services that come with the dirty word tariffs. And the Attorney General backed down as soon as the president came out and said that he wanted to raise taxes on the American people, especially after we just got that tax cut, now we’re increasing taxes. I think it’s problematic, and the Attorney General seems to support that kind of a policy, and, as a fiscal conservative and someone who believes in free trade, I oppose that. I think we need to lower taxes not increase them.
