BERRYVILLE, Ark. — A Local food bank is ten thousand dollars richer, thanks to a generous grant.
Big smiles all around as the “Loaves and Fishes Food Bank of the Ozarks” in Berryville, Arkansas accepts a $10,000 grant from “Blue and You Foundation.”
“We are fortunate to have an opportunity to assist in the healthcare needs for all Arkansans,” says Scott Cain of Blue & You. Cain says they had the daunting task of choosing which charities out of more than 200 would get a slice of $2.2 million. That money will put food on the tables of families with at-risk children.
“We are specifically looking at children who have challenges having enough food on the weekend,” says Dale Hunter, a board member with Loaves and Fishes.
Hunter says they’ve partnered with local schools to identify those children who rely on meals from school. The group tapped into school counselors, nurses and teacher to get the job done – and it wasn’t just about hunger. They make nutrition a priority.
“We have some specific goals in terms of how much protein we’re going to include in each bag and how much fiber,” Hunter says they will also try to eliminate sodium and sugars.
Each bag contains 5 to 6 pounds of food. Loaves and Fishes delivers 25 to 30 thousand pounds every year. All of the staff works on a volunteer basis, which means the entire 10-thousand-dollars will go to their “Hungry Kids Program.”
We are hoping that one of the things they’ll get out of the program, is to learn to eat better,” Hunter said with a smile.
Since it’s inception five years ago, Loaves and Fishes has delivered up to 5-thousand bags of food in the course of a school year.
