PARIS, France — Nearly $1 billion has been pledged to rebuild Notre Dame after a devastating fire tore through the Cathedral on Monday.
French President Emmanuel Macron vows to rebuild the 12th century landmark in five years and make it even more beautiful than before.
France also issued a call to arms for architects from around the world to compete to design a new spire to replace the one destroyed.
The five-year plan for rebuilding the famed Cathedral coincides with the Summer Olympics in 2024 when millions of tourists are expected to visit the French capital.
One woman whose worshiped at Notre Dame for 44 years can hardly look at the destruction.
“She was so beautiful… And now the sky is sad,” Cecile Deleville said. “This is such a shock to me.”
At the Vatican, Pope Francis thanked firefighters who risked their lives to save the Holy Site and its priceless relics.
