Va. (FOX) — A 22-year-old man managed to escape from a Virginia cave and call 911 for help while his five friends remain trapped Sunday morning as rescuers rushed to the scene.
The trapped men, ranging in age from 35 to 59, are believed to be okay and uninjured inside Cyclops Cave, according to Russell County Emergency Management.
They had been planning to spend the night inside the cave until it started to rain on Saturday around 11 p.m., which made it slippery and therefore difficult to leave.
Russell County Emergency Management told local media that the trapped men are weak, hypothermic and unable to climb out of the cave.
Since Russell County crews do not have certified equipment to pull out the men, a cave rescue team from Radford, Va., is now on the way. It’s a 3-hour drive to the cave from Radford, reports WYMT.
Authorities expect the men to be pulled out to safety closer to 12 p.m.
