SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A 17-year old man from Springfield is accused of severely beating his three week old son.

Prosecutors charge Kenneth Burkholder with child abuse and assault.  He was before a judge Monday.

After Burkholder and the child’s mother took the boy to a Springfield hospital with bruises, Burkholder told police he had slipped and dropped the infant.

According to a probable cause statement from police (attached above) Burkholder later admitted that he had hit the child several times in the head “because he was frustrated, and could not stop striking him once he started."

Hospital officials said the infant suffered bruises over and had multiple skull fractures, according to court documents.

Burkholder is charged with first degree assault and abuse of a child, both felonies.

He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 30. Online court record indicate he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond and is not to be released on bond “under any circumstances” until a public defender application is completed.
