Craig Wood, 45, heard the three charges filed against him - 1st degree murder, armed criminal action and child kidnapping - and agreed that he understood the charges.
Wood appeared over a video link from the Greene County Jail and was never physically in the courtroom.
Family members of Hailey Owens sat on the first row inside a courtroom on the third floor here.
They caught a glimpse for the first time of Craig Wood on the video screen.
Wood is being represented by Public defender Chris Hatley at this time.
But Greene County assistant prosecutor Todd Myers says the investigation shows Wood has a million dollar trust and can afford his own attorney.
Judge Dan Imhoff says that issue will be decided later.
Wood will be back in court on March 19th and then a preliminary hearing was set for April 7th.
Hatley filed a motion to preserve all notes taken during the investigation and that was granted by the judge.
Wood remains jailed without bond.
