SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Firefighters spent Wednesday afternoon battling flames at a historic home after a fire broke out in the 1500 block of N. Jefferson Ave. in Springfield.

The blaze began just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Neighbors are describing the fire as "a vibration that shook a home two houses away."  They say they heard a loud boom and seconds later the home was fully engulfed in flames.

The smoke from the fire could be seen from a few miles away.

One neighbor says the historic home has been vacant for about nine months, but there have been people camping out in it.  The neighbor says the neighborhood recently discussed the possibility of boarding up the home to keep away vandals.

Springfield Fire Department Spokesperson Cara Erwin says, at this time, it cannot be confirmed if anyone is in the house or if it is vacant.

No other details were immediately available. Information will be updated as it is released.
