Would-be Robber Charged, Held in Arizona

MARIONVILLE, Mo. -- Officials have identified and charged a man who was hapless enough to try to rob Jon Alexander at a Marionville liquor store. The surveillance video of that attempt, foiled by Alexander’s quick draw of his own weapon, has gone viral on the web.

Online records in the case identify the would-be armed robber as Arvin Brandon Smith, 31, of Colorado Springs, Colo.

According to the Marionville Police Department, Smith was arrested on charges of shoplifting and the possession of drug paraphernalia in Arizona last Friday.

Authorities in Arizona are now holding Smith to be extradited to Missouri to face charges of armed criminal action, assault, unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

Smith is accused of the attempted-armed robbery of Beer30 on Sept. 1, while Alexander was working as clerk.

The surveillance video shows the would-be robber enter the store, approach the counter and pull a gun from his back pocket. Alexander is seen pushing the gun away with his left hand and drawing his own 9 millimeter, putting the barrel against the robber’s mouth.

The would-be robber then fled the store. No one was injured.

Smith’s bond is set at $500,000 in Missouri.
