STRAFFORD, Mo. -- A World War II veteran from the Ozarks receives the highest Medal of Honor the French government awards. He also got his high school diploma.

A Veterans Day ceremony was held at Strafford High School to honor our servicemen and women.

Veteran Dale Irvine received the Knight of Legion Medal of Honor from the French Consulate. He also received an honorary high school diploma from his alma mater, Pleasant Hope High School.

Irvine was drafted when he was in the 11th grade and never finished school. He said today's recognition is wonderful.

“It feels good,” says Irvine. “But I didn't know they were going to do all this. It kind of snuck up on me.”

The Commandant of Engineering at Fort Leonard Wood presented the medal to Irvine.
