Wintry Mix of Precipitation is Expected Friday and Friday Night

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Low pressure will move into the southern plains on Friday. Moisture and lift ahead of the low will spread rapidly northeast into southwest Missouri Friday morning. While warmer temperatures are also expected to spread into the region, some areas will still be cold enough to see the potential for some light freezing rain accumulation or possibly some light sleet or snow in some areas.
Low pressure will move into the southern plains on Friday.

Warmer temperatures will spread into the region by early afternoon with most areas seeing temperatures above freezing. By Friday night, colder temperatures may again allow any precipitation to fall as a wintry mix of snow and freezing drizzle.

Precipitation will spread into far southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas by 7 am Friday morning, then spread quickly northeast through much the area by 9 am to 11 am. By early to mid afternoon most of the precipitation will fall as rain, but after 6 pm Friday evening,  temperatures wiil again cool enough for some areas to see a wintry mix.

Overall ice accumulation will generally be a tenth of an inch or less with the best chances for ice along the Highway 60 corridor from the Springfield area and points east. The best chances for light accumulating snow...up to an inch...will be in central Missouri.

Precipitation type will be greatly dependent on timing along with temperatures at the surface and aloft. A small change in predicted temperatures can and will lead to changes in the forecast. There are enough indications that some road surfaces, especially elevated surfaces, may be affected by light icing on Friday morning. A wintry mix may also affect travel Friday night.
