SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The public bid farewell to the late John Q. Hammons Tuesday afternoon.

John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts held a public memorial (watch above) inside the JQH Arena on the Missouri State University campus.

The one-hour event has wrapped up, and we'll have coverage tonight on KOLR10 News at Five and Six.

The speakers were Jim Anderson, president of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Gary Stratman with the Presbyterian Church; Springfield Mayor Bob Stephens; Former Drury President Dr. Johne E. Moore Jr.; Jerald Andrews, president and executive director of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame; J. Erik Kamfjord, chairman of Winegardner and Hammons, Inc.; Springfield Cardinals General Manager and Vice President Matt Gifford; and Dr. Andrew Chaney, senior pastor at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Hammons died Sunday in his home at Elfindale Manor. He was 94 years old. His many business ventures included more than 200 hotel properties in more than 40 states. His name is easily visible in Springfield and the surrounding area.
