GOLDEN CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Highway Patrol confirms a body found Wednesday afternoon is in fact that of 12-year-old Adriaunna Horton.

The body was located by law enforcement officers in a wooded area southeast of Golden City, in rural Dade County, near the Barton County Line.

Horton was reported missing on Monday, August 19, at approximately 5:30 p.m., when she was last seen getting into a vehicle near Hazel Park in Golden City.

The people of the small city are trying to return to their regular routines, but there was a sense of sadness and anxiousness until they identify the body.

The community turned out all week in a show of support for the Horton family, and that support continued after the efforts were called off, when authorities found what they believe to be Adriaunna's body.

Kevin Baldwin, superintendent of Golden City School, says they've had to provide some grief counseling to the students and teachers and try to provide as normal of a place as possible for the kids.

"We're family and when something like this happens people are going to hurt," he says. "There's a lot of disappoinment, grief, a lot of sadness a tearing of the heart, because we're missing one of our family members. Almost all of our elementary teachers had Adriaunna in class and they all fell in love with her."

At the local Casey's gas station, there is already a donation jar with a note saying "to help the Horton family with funeral expenses." It's just one more sign of the closeness of this community.

The Patrol says a final news briefing will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at the Barton County Ambulance Service Headquarters in Lamar.
