SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Autopsy results have shown that a Springfield man involved in a three-vehicle accident Sunday morning at Kearney and National died of injuries in that crash, not a medical episode that was considered as a cause of the incident.

James K. Cheffey, 44, was driving a Honda eastbound on Kearney when he crossed into the westbound lanes of traffic and slammed into a Pontiac Grand Prix, according to Springfield police. A Mercy Hospital ambulance following the Grand Prix also struck the vehicle.

Police thought at the time Cheffey might have had a medical emergency moments before the accident because evidence suggests he may have lost consciousness before the collision, but the autopsy indicated the cause of death was accident injuries.

Four people were transported to a local hospital for injuries.

The ambulance was not on a patient run at the time of the accident
