Tractor-Trailer Fire Shuts Down Both Lanes of Traffic on I-44 Near Rolla

ROLLA, Mo. – A tractor-trailer fire has shut down both lanes on I-44 near Rolla, causing major backups in traffic.

According to Troop I of the Highway Patrol, the incident happened at the 185.5 mile marker on I-44 in the westbound lane.

Westbound lanes are estimated at a three-hour clean-up time, but the Highway Patrol says that the eastbound lane should not take that long.

MoDOT and the Highway Patrol are on scene now to clear the wreckage.

The driver of the tractor-trailer has sustained only minor injuries, according to the Highway Patrol.

According to a Facebook post by the the Rolla Fire and Rescue, the truck is believed to be carrying an engineered polymer pellet that is very flammable and produces a large quantity of heavy smoke.

The fire has since been extinguished with salvage and overhaul expected to take several hours.
