Thursday's Turkey Trot - What You Need to Know

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Final registration will be held this morning for tomorrow's 19th annual Turkey Trot in downtown Springfield. Here's what you need to know.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Final registration will be held this morning for tomorrow's 19th annual Turkey Trot in downtown Springfield.

It's one of the biggest Thanksgiving Day 5k run/walks in Springfield every year, drawing nearly 10,000 people last year.  And it's become a family holiday tradition for many in the Ozarks.

We're live this morning at the Springfield Expo Center where registration will be held this morning.  Turkey Trot director Anne-Mary McGrath joins us with all the information you need. 
   
On-site registration opens Wednesday, Nov. 27, 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Springfield Expo Center, 635 E. St. Louis St., in downtown Springfield. On-site registration continues 6:15-7 a.m. on race day. On-site registration is $25/adults and $20/children.

Turkey Trot is Springfield's largest timed 5K race of the year and the largest Thanksgiving Day 5K in Missouri, attracting 9,007 participants in 2012. The event takes place at 8 a.m. in downtown Springfield and the MSU campus, and is held rain, snow or shine. Proceeds benefit the Developmental Center of the Ozarks and Springfield-Greene County Park Board's Scholarship Fund. The event also serves as a food drive for Ozarks Food Harvest.

More about Turkey Trot:

Turkey Trot is a 5K race, run, walk and community event that takes place on the morning of Thanksgiving Day in downtown Springfield.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Developmental Center of the Ozarks and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board Scholarship Fund. Turkey Trot is also a food drive for Ozarks Food Harvest.
Drop off your food donations inside the Springfield Expo Center. Volunteers from Ozarks Food Harvest will be on site to collect your donations. Look for the signs.

Turkey Trot started in 1995 with 117 participants. The event has grown to more than 9,000 participants in 2012. It's the largest Thanksgiving Day 5K in Missouri and Springfield's largest annual timed race.
You can go at your own speed. There are categories for racers, runners and walkers.

This year's Turkey Trot is Thanksgiving Day -Thursday, Nov. 28, 8 a.m. The race starts and ends at the Springfield Expo Center, 635 E. St Louis St., downtown Springfield. The race course includes downtown Springfield and the Missouri State University campus.

You must register to participate in Turkey Trot. Registration includes a t-shirt, race bib/number and timing chip. As of today, November 27, there is only one way available to register:     
    On-Site (Wednesday, Nov. 27, and Race Day) Register in person Wednesday, Nov. 27, 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; or on Race Day, Thursday, Nov. 28. 6:15 - 7 a.m., at the Springfield Expo Center, 635 E. St Louis St., downtown Springfield. On-site registration prices are $5 higher. If you register on-site, your T-shirt will be printed while you wait.
On-site registration (Wednesday, Nov. 27, 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; or on Race Day, Thursday, Nov. 28. 6:15 - 7 a.m.) is $25/adults, $20/kids 12 and younger. Each online registration will have a $3.25 service fee.

Race Day parking is available at Jordan Valley Car Park, Mediacom Ice Park, Hammons Tower and other area lots. Please note these streets will be closed on race day:
St. Louis St., closed between Kimbrough Ave. and John Q. Hammons Parkway. You must access the Jordan Valley Car Park from East Trafficway.
Kimbrough Ave., closed between East Trafficway and Walnut St.

 Due to safety, headphones are not allowed during the race.
For safety reasons, all skates, rollerblades, heelies, skateboards, bicycles and other wheeled toys are not allowed.
Strollers are welcome in the Family/Walker and Pet categories. No registration is required for babies in strollers.
 Friendly dogs are welcome in the Pet category only. Dogs must be on a short leash. Please clean up after your dog.
