(Springfield, MO) -- Springfield Police are investigating a shooting in north Springfield.  They say someone shot a 16-year-old Hillcrest student multiple times as he answered the door of a home on the 700 block of W. Chicago.

Police say the teenager suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.  No one else was hurt at the home.

Investigators believe the house was hosting a birthday party for a five-year-old when the shooting happened close to 5:30 Sunday evening.

"I just know somebody got shot and the rest of the kids are okay," said the mother of one of the kids at that party, Tonia Reese.

Police say a schoolmate of the victim was the likely shooter.  However, officers had not captured the suspect as of late Sunday evening.

Police believe it was only coincidence the crime happened during what was believed to be a young child's birthday. Still, investigators say the party added another challenge to this case.

"You can imagine with all the little five-year-olds," Sgt. Robert Pitts said, "it was pretty traumatic here for a little bit."

Police believe about five kids were attending the party.
