(CNN)-- The National Weather Service says this week some areas will experience the coldest temperatures they've seen in almost 20 years as an arctic cold front moves through. Snow is already falling across the Midwest cities like St. Louis are bracing for the worst.

"Given the forecast we expect this to be a three-day event. So our emergency operation center will remain open for the next three days,” said Mayor Francis Slay of St. Louis, "it's going to be slow, it's going to be messy, it's going to be inconvenient.  And, in many cases, because of the slick weather, the wind and the cold weather it's going to be dangerous."

Forecasters say by Wednesday nearly half the nation will shudder in temperatures of zero or lower.
