SPS Board to Discuss Adding Teachers, Begin Search for New Superintendent

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Springfield R-12 School Board will discuss adding new teachers during a meeting Tuesday night.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Springfield R-12 School Board will discuss adding new teachers during a meeting Tuesday night.

The district announced Monday that Westport K-8 School and Mark Twain and Wilder elementary schools may get extra teaching staff.

A request to add three elementary teaching positions to reduce class sizes at those schools is among the agenda items to be considered by the Springfield school board at its Aug. 20 regular meeting.

District administration is requesting the additional teaching staff to lower teacher-student ratios at the schools. If approved, Westport K-8 School and Wilder Elementary School will each receive a new kindergarten teacher. The third teaching position will help reduce the class size in third-grade and fourth-grade classrooms at Twain Elementary School.

At its meeting, the school board will also discuss the upcoming search for a new superintendent. Dr. Norm Ridder announced earlier this month that this will be his last year at SPS.

The school board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the assembly room at Kraft Administrative Center, 1359 E. St. Louis St.

The Board will also hold a public hearing on the ad valorem property tax rates for 2013. The Board conducts this hearing annually prior to setting the annual tax rate.
