Springfield's First Night Tonight Rings In Its 24th New Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The 2014 First Night celebration in Springfield starts this evening with some venues opening at 6pm.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The city of Springfield is ready to ring in the new year with its 2014 First Night celebration.

Tonight (Tuesday) marks the 24th annual event for the city.  Some venues open as early as 6pm with family-friendly events across the downtown area.

"It's a great event for the whole family at a good price," Urban District Alliance Community Coordinator Donnie Rodgers.

Several family-friendly events are planned across the downtown area, including ice skating, interactive art, live music and comedy.

The Gillioz Theatre, Discovery Center, the YMCA, Park Central Library and the newly revived Fox Theatre are just some of the participating venues.  Shuttles will be running throughout the night.

Event organizers say first night is not just fun, but a fundraiser for community art.

"The proceeds from first night go to the Springfield regional arts council. So this is the 24th year for the event, so it's been around for a long time and it helps promote art in our community," Rodgers said.

The night will be topped off with a midnight fireworks show at Jordan Valley Park.

Tickets are all-inclusive and cost $8, they'll cost $10 on Tuesday night. Family packages are also available. More information on venues and times is available at firstnightspringfield.org
