Snow Days Impacting Finals and New Semester

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- As with dozens of other school districts in the region, there is no school again today for kids in the Springfield Public School System.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- As with dozens of other school districts in the region, there is no school again today for kids in the Springfield Public School System.

Tuesday marks the sixth snow day taken this school year in Springfield.
All districts in Missouri must build six snow days into their calendars.

So at this point, the last day of school in Springfield has not changed - it is still May 23rd.

But the days off have affected first semester finals, and the start of the second semester, which begins January 10th.  It was originally to have begun January 2.

"It's never ideal to have pushed first semester finals back this far, it's never the intention or desire," says Dr. Justin Herrell, SPS Associate Superintendent.  "But it's one of those situations where you have to deal with what you deal with, and the weather is what it is."

Finals will be given when students do return to class.  A posting on the Kickapoo High School Facebook page says; "Finals update due to school cancelled on Monday: when we return to school FIRST and THIRD block finals will be given. On the following day SECOND and FOURTH block finals will be given. Good luck on finals and enjoy your snow day!"
