Research: Short Bursts of Intense Exercise Helps Weight Loss

Stringing together short bouts of exercise can help you keep your weight down - even if you work out less than 10 minutes at a stretch.

The current recommendation is for Americans to get 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. Experts say it's okay to break this down into 10 minute workout sessions if that's more convenient than exercising for a half hour straight.

But now research says every minute counts when it comes to keeping our weight down. Even walking at a fast clip from 1 to 9 minutes at a stretch, several times a day, can help us lose weight. The key is pace. As long as you get the heart and lungs pumping so that you begin to break a sweat, this will get the job done.

Researchers say the level of intensity should be equivalent to the pace needed to walk a mile in 20 minutes. And of course, the more workout sessions you can squeeze in a day, the better.

How might this work for you? Take short breaks during the day and go for a brisk walk or two - and work in some stairs if you can. And park far from your destination whether for work or play.
