SPRINGFIELD -- People grew tired of watching "johns" troll for sex near the intersection of Grant and Mount Vernon in Springfield, so they called Springfield Police, who moved in with an undercover operation.
Springfield Police had two female undercover officers pose as prostitutes and it didn't take long before they were making arrests.
Grant Street resident James Grisham lives just yards away from the intersection of Grant and Mount Vernon.
Grisham says he had no idea there were prostitutes and johns so close to his home.
"Yeah, I have grandchildren that live here in my house, I am just glad they finally caught these guys,” says Grisham.
Some workers and residents here did notice the illegal activity and they got fed up.
Captain Greg Higdon said the police department received multiple complaints.
"We received some complaints from area businesses and area citizens about possible prostitution in the area,” says Higdon.
Thursday night police moved in.
"We did use two undercover female police officer to attract what is commonly called a john," says Higdon.
It took police just four hours to pick up several suspects.
"It's going on there quite a bit from what we gathered from our investigation,” says Higdon. “Four-hour operation netted five arrests that's a that's a good result."
Higdon says once a deal was made, arresting officers moved in.
"A suspect asked for sex-for-money and then they were subsequently arrested and taken to the Greene County Jail for processing," says Higdon.
James Grisham says he's going to do more to make sure his grandchildren live in a safe neighborhood.
"(It) makes me want to open my eyes more," says Grisham.
Police have conducted more of these stings near Grant Beach Park, which also netted several arrests earlier this year.
