REPUBLIC, Mo. -- The Republic School District celebrated the opening of its newest elementary school.

Although classes have been underway since Aug. 14, Thursday's event formally introduced Sweeny Elementary, the district's new K-5 facility.

The building was remodeled from the former early childhood center, adding 12 new classrooms, expanding the cafeteria and adding on a gymnasium which also serves as a FEMA safe room.

The school is named for Civil War Union General Thomas William Sweeny, who fought at nearby Wilson's Creek.

The ribbon cutting was held in the school's gym during school hours.

"It was nice to have our students involved," said Josey McPhail, director of communications. "That's why we chose to do it during the day."

The new Early Childhood Center and Sweeny Elementary were constructed in response to a passed bond issue in 2012 for $8.7 million.

Earlier this month, the district held a grand opening for the Early Childhood Center.
