Phelps County Sheriff's Department Investigating Accidental Shooting Death

EDGAR SPRINGS, Mo. -- A man died on Oct. 18 after he reportedly shot himself in the abdomen. The Phelps County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
EDGAR SPRINGS, Mo. -- The death of a man suffering from a gunshot to the abdomen is under investigation, according to the Phelps County Sheriff's Department.

In a statement, the sheriff's department says deputies were dispatched to the 31000 block of County Road 6210 in Edgar Springs for a report of shots fired.

While en route to the location, deputies learned that Douglas L. Stewell, 52, of Oklahoma, had been shot in the abdomen and was being driven to the hospital by friends.

An ambulance intercepted the vehicle and began treatment on Stewell while transporting him to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. 

Stewell later died of his injuries.

An investigation by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and the Phelps County Coroner was conducted and preliminary findings indicate Stewell accidentally shot himself, according to the Phelps County Sheriff's Office.

An investigation into the death is ongoing.
