OTO Considers Changing Names of Busy Highways

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The busiest highways around Springfield may have their names changed. The Ozarks Transportation Organization (OTO) is considering a plan to rename Highway 65 and James River Freeway into I-244.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The busiest highways around Springfield may have their names changed.

The Ozarks Transportation Organization (OTO) is considering a plan to rename Highway 65 and James River Freeway into I-244.

There are two reasons for this.

One is safety.

If there was a bad accident on Interstate 44, it's easier to give one road name as a detour.

The other reason is to improve business in the area.

Having a road called an Interstate sounds a little more prestigious.

"We feel like businesses are looking for two things, direct access and visibility,” says Sara Fields, Ozarks Transportation Organization Executive Director. “And additional mileage of interstate will do that for us and help us be more competitive in attracting more businesses."

This proposal will be discussed at the Ozarks Transportation Organization's next meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

If approved locally, the OTO must then seek approval from the Federal Highway Administration.
